Hemingstone Parish Council has declared a Climate Emergency In no particular order, here are the top five most effective actions that we can take as individuals: • Make sure the energy you use comes from environmentally sustainable resources. In the first place this can be done by using a 'real' renewable energy provider. Installing your own sustainable energy source might also be possible. Use less. • Think about the food you eat. Transitioning to a plant-based diet would be best but cutting down on the amount of meat and dairy you eat would help. A quarter of greenhouse gas emissions come from the production and transportation of food. Beef and lamb have particularly high carbon footprints. It’s not quite that simple though as having a plant-based diet but eating out of season asparagus flown in from the other side of the world has a very high carbon footprint too. • Think about where you invest or keep your money. Does your bank or pension fund support or invest in fossil fuel or other polluting industries? Quite simply whatever is funded happens. • Consider your transport options. Is your car journey necessary? If it is, can you combine 'missions' or can you share your journey to work for example? Is it possible to use public transport or walk or cycle? Do you need to fly - could you take the train instead? Reducing or cutting out flying is probably the single biggest action you could take. • Only purchase what you need. Reduce, reuse, recycle - repair, use for longer.
